Britain again didn’t leave the EU on this date.įinally in January 2020 the Brexit 50p entire circulation with the amended Brexit exit date of 31st January 2020. Images were released which included the planned but not final Brexit exit date of 31st October 2019. This time instead of a limited planned circulation of 10,000, it was announced that millions would go into circulation. Sajid Javid, Philip Hammond’s successor, announced plans for a new Brexit 50p coin in August 2019. It was due to be launched on one of the original Brexit dates of 29th March 2019 – obviously Britain didn’t come close to leaving the EU by that date and the plans for the coin changed. At the time Philip Hammond, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, outlined a coin that would be limited to 10,000 in circulation and would read “Friendship with all nations”. Originally the idea for a Brexit coin was conceived back in October 2018 – 2 years after the Brexit vote and 2 years before Britain’s official exit from the EU. Similar to the Brexit process, the Brexit coin was plagued with delays and changes whilst it was being developed. The Brexit 50p coin was first launched into UK circulation on the 31st January 2020.
